Anti-Inflammatory Iced Golden Milk

Writer: Lisa Makeeva, RD, M.A.NLisa Makeeva, RD, M.A.N

Summer 2020 is just around the corner and if you are looking for a refreshing beverage then you've come to the right place!

Golden milk may have made its way into Toronto cafe's fairly recently, however it's no stranger to India, where golden milk has literally been consumed for centuries.

It's essentially a cocktail of antioxidant / anti-inflammatory superstars - I'm talking about turmeric. ginger, and cinnamon. Now I know that inflammation has become a bit of a buzz word in the last few years but there's good reason for this. More and more research is demonstrating that inflammation is at the crux of most of our modern day ailments, including diabetes, hypertension, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Turns out turmeric and curcumin (the active component in turmeric) have had thousands of published peer-reviewed studies, supporting its ability to improve PMS symptoms, reduce muscle soreness post exercise in athletes, and even alleviate arthritic joint pain!

.

Try it for yourself and see how you feel!

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups milk of your choice ( I like to use unsweetened cashew)

1/4 cup boiling water

1 1/2 TSP turmeric powder

1/4 TSP ginger powder

1/4 TSP cinnamon powder

pinch of cardamom powder

pinch of black pepper**

10 drops NOW liquid French vanilla stevia

1 TSP Manuka honey

Do not skip this step! On its own, turmeric is not easily absorbed by the body, but adding a pinch of black pepper enhances absorption by 2000%!

HOW:

1) Add all the spices to a cup and steep in 1/4 cup boiling water for 5-10 minutes.

2) Then add to a blender and mix with cashew milk, stevia, and honey.

3) Pour over ice cubes and enjoy!
